How does a split system compare to a package unit?

If you are in the market for a new central air conditioning system, you’ll likely be selecting from two main system types: split systems or packaged systems. Each system type will cool your home or business, but they do have many differences. See how they compare so you can make an informed purchase decision.

What is a split system? A split system is a type of central air conditioner made up of two components: the outdoor compressor & condenser unit, and the indoor cabinet holding the evaporator coils. The system gets its name because its components are split, not housed together. Split systems are typically chosen when replacing an old split system, or to cool homes and businesses with existing furnaces – the split system will use the furnace’s air handler to distribute cool air.

What is a packaged unit? A packaged air conditioner is a system that houses all components in one location. The compressor, condenser, and evaporator coils are all packaged in a single metal cabinet, installed on the roof or exterior of a building or home. Some packaged models also contain heating equipment, and will function as the home or business’s heating system, too. Packaged units are often selected for applications with limited installation space.

Footprint Comparison

Packaged units are ideal for limited space applications because of their small footprint, having all components packaged in a single cabinet. They also do not require interior components, saving space inside the home or building. Split systems require space indoors and outside for installation.

Efficiency Comparison

If energy efficiency is a goal, split systems offer higher SEER ratings than packaged units. Split central air conditioners offer SEER ratings from 13 to 23, while packaged units only range from 10 to 18 SEER.

Cost Comparison

Packaged units are typically cheaper to install. Because a packaged unit’s components are housed together, less labor is involved than with a split system. Also, packaged cooling systems can come pre-charged with the necessary refrigerant, cutting the cost of system charging once installed.

Due to their higher energy efficiency ratings, split cooling systems will be more affordable to operate ongoing. Packaged units consume more electricity, so it will cost more to cool a home or building using this type of central air conditioner.

I was impressed with the conversation and quality I experienced when working with Parker's. Josh took the time to listen to our needs and provide multiple solutions. The workers were communicative and did a great job. We can already tell the difference in quality in our new heating and cooling system.

Great company to service your HVAC unit. We have been using Parkers since 2003 and will not use another company to service our unit. Thank you Parkers for being the best in the business!

-Selene B.

Parker's had a technician to our house quickly and Jim was able to have our heat up and running in no time. Will definitely call them for any future heating and cooling needs.

One of the owners of the company took the time to work with us to ensure that we had the product that worked best for us. Working with this company reminds us of the customer service that was provided before companies started to outsource portions of their operations. Great praise to Parkers for everything that they do...
