Furnace Replacement vs. Repair: How to Know When It’s Time

Regular maintenance is crucial for ensuring a furnace remains in good shape. Nonetheless, even a properly maintained furnace is almost guaranteed to eventually develop an issue that requires professional repair.

An experienced furnace technician can fix virtually any problem you encounter, but whether it’s worth paying to repair your furnace or if you’re better off replacing it is an entirely different matter. In this article, we’ll look at the main factors to consider when deciding whether to repair your furnace, and the signs that indicate it’s soon time for a replacement.

New furnace replacement

Important Factors to Consider

Age is almost always going to be one of the biggest determining factors in whether it’s worth repairing a furnace. Gas furnaces usually last 12 to 15 years, though some can last up to 20 years. The typical lifespan of an electric furnace is 20 to 25 years. Once you get to within five years or so of your furnace’s average life expectancy, repairing it rarely makes much sense. The exception is if there’s only a minor issue, like a worn-out igniter or flame sensor, which won’t cost much to repair.

The estimated cost to repair the furnace also plays a key role. Even if your furnace isn’t all that old, we’d still recommend replacing it if the repair is going to cost close to 50% of what you’d pay to install a new furnace. Many HVAC experts also use the Rule of 5,000 when advising customers on whether or not to repair their furnace. This rule simply states that if the repair cost multiplied by the age of the furnace is over 5,000, replacement is the smart financial decision.

You also want to consider factors like your furnace’s efficiency and overall performance. Let’s say that you have a conventional furnace that’s only 80% efficient. Even if it won’t cost that much to repair, replacing it with a high-efficiency condensing furnace will save you significant money in the long run because your heating costs will be much lower.

In terms of performance, the main thing to focus on is how evenly and effectively the furnace heats, especially in colder weather. You also need to think about the overall condition, i.e., how many times you’ve needed to have the furnace repaired. It’s normal for a furnace to require a few repairs over the course of its life. Repeated breakdowns or needing to pay for additional repairs year after year is generally a sign that a furnace is beginning to fail. Even if whatever problem the furnace currently has isn’t all that costly, it really doesn’t make sense to pay for the repair when you can be fairly certain another issue will soon arise.

Signs It’s Time to Consider Furnace Replacement

The one thing you always want to avoid is your furnace suddenly dying in the middle of winter, making you need to schedule an emergency replacement. The risk of this happening increases as the furnace gets older. The increased wear and tear a furnace experiences when it is not operating effectively can also lead to sudden failure. Even if your furnace doesn’t need repairing, there are some signs that can help you know it may soon break down or that it’s time to consider an upgrade.

Some of the main warning signs to watch for include long run times, frequent cycling, excessive noise, unusual sounds, and uneven heating. Steadily increasing utility bills are another obvious sign that your furnace no longer performs as well as it should. If you notice any of these signs, it’s crucial that you schedule a professional inspection as soon as possible. Some of these signs can indicate only a minor problem that requires an easy, fairly inexpensive repair. Waiting to get the issue resolved can quickly worsen it, leading to additional repairs or a potential total system failure.

I was impressed with the conversation and quality I experienced when working with Parker's. Josh took the time to listen to our needs and provide multiple solutions. Parker's had a technician to our house quickly and Jim was able to have our heat up and running in no time. Will definitely call them for any future heating and cooling needs.

One of the owners of the company took the time to work with us to ensure that we had the product that worked best for us. Working with this company reminds us of the customer service that was provided before companies started to outsource portions of their operations. Great praise to Parkers for everything that they do...
