What To Do When Your AC Unit Freezes Up
Summer is here, and the calendar is filled with plenty of hot and humid days that are going to put significant strain on your cooling system. As the wear and tear build up, it’s possible your that unit will freeze up and stop delivering the cool air you depend on for your health and comfort. When that happens, the team at Parker’s Heating & Cooling recommends taking prompt action to minimize damage to your system and to restore your comfort as soon as possible.
What Causes Coils To Freeze?
There are many things that can cause coils to freeze over, but the most common causes are loss of refrigerant due to leaks, dirty air filters that restrict airflow, and dirt or debris buildup on the coils. Fortunately, these are all issues that can be prevented with regular professional maintenance.
Recognizing Signs of a Frozen Cooling System
Knowing how to spot the signs of a frozen AC system is vital. If you notice any of the following, the sooner you take action, the better:
- Diminished airflow through registers: When coils freeze over, it restricts overflow, which diminishes the supply of cold air circulating through your home.
- Visible frost: AC coolant lines are copper, and it’s easy to see frost that has built up on these lines.
Got an Emergency?
We Can Help!Fixing the Problem
The first step you should take is to deactivate the air conditioner. You can do this at the thermostat or, better still, directly at the breaker box. Depending on ambient temperature, frost buildup, and other factors, the process of defrosting your coils can take as long as 24 hours to complete.
Once the unit is shut down, turn your thermostat fan to “On.” This will cause the fan to blow air over the coil. As this air circulates, it will defrost the coils.
Another option is to take lukewarm water and pour it over the coils to melt the ice. The water doesn’t need to be hot, as warm water will be more than sufficient to expedite the process.
Once the coils are defrosted, you will want to check the filters and allow the coils to dry. It is also advisable to give them a good cleaning at this time. Once everything is defrosted, cleaned, and dried, turn your AC unit back on and monitor its operation.
